How does two-factor sign-in work and what do I do if I lose my phone?

Last reviewed 2 min read

Two-factor sign-in is required at tiaki: in addition to your password, you enter a 6-digit code from an authenticator app. If your phone is gone, you sign in with one of your recovery codes.

With two-factor sign-in, a stolen password isn’t enough to get into your account. You set it up when you sign up, and it’s required for every account.

Step by step: setting it up

  1. Install an authenticator app on your phone, for example Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or 1Password.
  2. On the Richte deine Authenticator-App ein (Set up your authenticator app) page, scan the code shown with the app. If that doesn’t work, open Scannen geht nicht? Schlüssel eintippen (Can’t scan? Type in the key) and type the key into the app.
  3. Enter the 6 digits from the app and tap Einrichten (Set up).
  4. Store your Wiederherstellungscodes (Recovery codes) safely, for example in your password manager. We only show them this one time.
  5. Tap Codes gesichert – los geht’s (Codes saved – let’s go).

You can see whether two-factor sign-in is active under Einstellungen (Settings) → Sicherheit (Security).

Phone gone? Here’s how you still get in

  1. Sign in as usual with your email and password.
  2. On the code page, open Kein Zugriff auf die App? Wiederherstellungscode nutzen (No access to the app? Use a recovery code).
  3. Enter one of your recovery codes (format XXXXX-XXXXX) and tap Mit Code anmelden (Sign in with code).

Note: Each recovery code works exactly once. After you use one, we send you an email for security.

Tip: When you switch phones, transfer the entries in your authenticator app to the new phone before you reset the old one.

Not working?

  • “Der Code stimmt nicht.” (The code is wrong.) – Use the current code; it changes every 30 seconds. Set your phone’s time to “automatic.”
  • Too many wrong codes? After several failed attempts, tiaki temporarily blocks sign-in and sends you an email. Wait and try again later.
  • No app and no recovery codes left? You can’t set up the authenticator app again yourself in the settings. Ask us via Ask a question in the Help Center.
